Rawa or Suji ka Upma is a famous breakfast dish in the South India and Maharashtra. It can be made in very little oil and with the use of a variety of green vegetables. Learn how to make this recipe with step by step photos and detailed recipe given below:

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Recipe Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients:

  • Semolina (suji) - 1 cup
  • Water - 2 cup
  • Salt as per taste
  • Olive Oil - 1 tea spoon
  • Curry Leaves (kari patta) - 1 tea spoon
  • Green Chilli (hari mirch) - 3 finely chopped
  • Mustard Seeds (rai) - 1 tea spoon
  • Peanuts (moongfali dana) - 1 big spoon
  • Carrot (gajar) - 2 big spoon finely chopped
  • Beans - 2 big spoon finely chopped
  • Ginger (adrak) - 1/2 inch piece finely chopped

Procedure:

  1. Heat a kadhai and add semolina (suji) to it. Dry roast the semolina (suji) till it turns light red in color. Then transfer the roasted semolina (suji) to a plate and keep it aside to be used in later steps. (Roast the semolina (suji) on low flame only otherwise it will turn dark red and will not taste good)
  2. Now add some olive oil to the same kadhai and roast the peanuts (moongfali dana) till they turn red in color. Keep the roasted peanuts (moongfali dana) aside to be added to the upma later)
  3. Now add the mustard seeds (rai) and curry leaves (kari patta) to the same kadhai. First allow the mustard seeds (rai) to crackle and then add the finely chopped carrot (gajar) and beans to it. Stir for 1 minute to cook the finely chopped vegetables.
  4. Add the roasted semolina (suji) to the kadhai and mix it well with the cooking vegetables. Now add 2 cus water to it and mix again. Cook the upma till the water is absorbed and the semolina (suji) swells to double its quantity. Now turn off the flame and the upma is now ready to be served hot.
